About Us
A Little Background…

Sebby’s Cafe & Deli is located in leafy Far Headingley on Otley Road, on the same parade as The Olive Tree (in between The Three Horseshoes and The New Inn for all you students!). It is owned and operated by Helen Charlton (that’s me) and Robert Toms (that’s my fella) and we have 25 years’ experience in the hospitality industry between us.

Sebby’s is small and perfectly formed, having only 10 covers inside and 6 outside, which makes for a lovely, cosy atmosphere and enhanced personal service.

Sebby’s is named after our camper van, a wonderful GMC Safari whom we called home for a straight 5 months. We travelled overland across the United States, visiting a mega 40 states – starting and ending in San Francisco!

After travelling in 2010, we decided to “live the dream” and start our own business, a little cafe where we could share our love of food, music and travelling! We like to think our menu reflects the best of some of the places we have travelled and we worked for a solid fortnight refurbishing with our own bare hands (well, Rob’s mostly – but I supervised and brought cake!)

So what you see when you visit Sebby’s is a true reflection of all our hard work.

We specialise in made to order sandwiches, award-winning coffee, daily specials and of course, home-made cakes! We both love baking and each have our own specialty (we once had a bake off, which was judged by head chef, I’m not saying who won – but personally I think it was a fix!)

Helen Charlton

Helen Charlton has lived in Leeds since moving down from Sunderland to go to university in 2001. Since then she has worked in a number of bars and restaurants in the city, gaining valuable experience helping her towards her goal of running her own cafè. That dream came true in September 2011 as months of planning and preparation resulted in Sebby’s! Helen welcomes everyone with a warm smile and is always free for a quick chat. Her passion is baking, and if she’s not cooking up a storm in the shop she’ll be found trying out new, exciting recipes at her local Clandestine Cake Club.

Things to know about Helen:

  • Helen is the world’s only Mackam-Filipina living in Leeds running a cafè.
  • She doesn’t have a favourite film.
  • Helen is a Gemini and hates cats.
  • All copies of her 2001 hit single ‘Cake That and Party’ have been destroyed.
Rob Toms

Rob Toms was born and raised in Leeds, and is proud to be a tight Yorkshireman! Having studied Civil Engineering for 4 years at university, the natural career path was to open up a cafe, so he was delighted to help Helen realise her dream. He does his fair share of cooking and baking, and if there’s any DIY to be done at the shop, you can be sure he’ll be there to make a half-hearted attempt at it, before cursing and getting a professional in. When he’s not at the shop he can be found on a football pitch or at a snooker table. Or watching The Simpsons.

Things to know about Rob:

  • Despite popular belief, Rob does not watch Hollyoaks.
  • Rob’s top 2 films are Shawshank Redemption and Zoolander. They’re so similar it’s too difficult to pick a favourite.
  • Rob is a Capricorn and hates cats.
  • During a family holiday in Scotland, Rob ran into a barbed wire fence and got a fish bone stuck in his tonsils. It is one of his many fond childhood memories.
